Name of Position Sunday School Teacher
Purpose ­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­ To ensure that the children who attend the church are introduced to the teachings of Christ in a safe, friendly, and welcoming environment where children can know the love of God and be spiritually nurtured through caring relationships within the St James’ community and enjoyable learning experiences.

Population Served: Grades 6-8 students as well as their parents/caregivers. If sufficient teachers are recruited for these Jr. High youth and St James’ is short on teachers for the younger or older grades, placement with children and/or youth in those grades might also be possible.
Pre-Requisites Required before Deployment ·         An acceptable result on a Police Records Check with additional vulnerable sector check (The church will reimburse you for any costs incurred).

·         Attendance at a Sexual Misconduct Awareness workshop (offered by the regional office of the Anglican church) or a parish-based session offered by the Coordinator of Children & Youth Ministries. (Time spent at this mandatory abuse prevention session will count as paid time).

Term of Office & Time Commitment Sunday mornings during academic year (September to April). Number of teaching Sundays negotiable with Children & Youth Ministry Coordinator. Flexibility built into teaching schedule to allow students Sundays off to study for exams.

2.5 hours per week (1 hour preparation plus 1.5 hours at church on Sunday each week teacher is scheduled to teach.) Sunday time includes first part of worship service, Sunday School Lesson–40-45 minutes–and closing part of service). Teacher will also be compensated for additional time spent at occasional Sunday School Teachers meetings or required training.

Supervision & Support
Reports to:  Children & Youth Ministry Coordinator
St James’ Children & Youth Ministry Coordinator, a part-time staff person, is available to consult, problem solve and offer resources. The Children & Youth Ministry Coordinator schedules teachers and produces rosters which highlight special days in the church year and inform teachers of any special activities planned (e.g. inter-generational services)

St James’ will provide:
(1)    Curriculum materials as a guide to make teaching fun and stimulate your own spiritual and intellectual growth as well as the children’s.
(2)    A well-stocked supply cupboard of arts & crafts materials.
(3)    Clean, age-appropriate classroom space.


Skills, Experience and Qualities Required:
The successful applicant will be:
·         A practicing Christian affiliated with a denomination that is part of the Canadian Council of Churches or other church denomination acceptable to St. James. Not necessarily an Anglican.
·         Willing to work with the curriculum provided or another approved resource
·         Dependable


The successful applicant will have:

·         Strong organizational and time management skills
·         Good communication and teaching skills
·         Ability to relate to children and understand their learning abilities
·         Ability to share their growing understanding of the Christian faith and to set a positive example


Duties and Responsibilities: Core Duties

·         Plan and prepare lessons based on curriculum/guidance provided by the Children and Youth Ministry Coordinator.
·         Select creative quality activities that relate scripture lessons to life situations faced by the students and ensure that activities are suited to the age group and interests.
·         Conduct lessons and supervise a group of children during scheduled Sunday School periods
·         Ensure an appropriate classroom set up and return the room to its previous form after class
·         Inform Children & Youth Ministry Coordinator and parent/guardian if any concerns or issues arise during class
·         Assist/lead Sunday group activities (e.g. Sunday School Christmas pageants, picnics and other special events)
·         Attend occasional Sunday School meetings and required pre-deployment training session
·         Track and review attendance


Limits of the Position: ·         Teaching is only to be carried out in predetermined class settings in the church building or on its grounds on Sunday mornings.
·         The Children & Youth Ministry Coordinator will normally be on site as supervisor. St. James’ Verger (custodian) is also normally on site to provide assistance.
